I think Saturday was my favorite day in Charleston. We went to the Boone Plantation and wandered around looking at the beautiful trees. One of the things I was looking forward to most with my return to SC was the spanish moss that grows on the trees. It makes everything look like a fairy tale. I feel like that is a little cliche, but the willowy look that it gives everything is so pretty and mysterious. The first time I went to Charleston, I took a picture of every tree I saw. I’m still obsessed.

this dirt road and fence look like “run Forrest, run”, but it’s not. I guess a lot of people think it was filmed there. Someone lied. The Notebook WAS filmed here though.
Here are some slave homes on the plantation. It makes me sad. These originally had no floors, shutters or even a door. Just holes in the wall for an entryway and windows. 15-20 slaves slept in them every night and they were still considered upper class slave homes.
This is the cotton dock. And a beautiful sky too.
Jake and I saw a pair of dolphins flirting and playing in the water. They were splashing around like a couple of teenagers.
After lunch we went sailing! None of us had ever been before. I didn’t know anything about sailing except that I should probably wear stripes.
Our captain was a friend of Jon’s from dental school. Jon and Kat have only lived in SC for a year and they already have a huge group of friends. I’m not surprised. They’re super likable. Don’t be jeal. (I’m jeal)
Anyway, Jon didn’t even know his friend worked there until the sea excursion had already been booked, but we were lucky enough to get him anyway. Phhhhewwww.
This bridge in that background is only 5 years old. The last time I was there it was brand new and I never even knew! It already looked like a total pro at bridging. Go bridge!
Jake said I look like an “alert puppy” in this picture.
Our captain, ‘scuse me…Our Cap’m let me stear for about an hour. Every once in a while he’d grab it from me when we were about to capsize. But I think for the most part he was proud of me. I think it was the stripes.
I sail!

you have us a bit spoiled it seems; all the magnificent trees and billowy clouds and fair seas and what we’d really love is a peek at Pip! how is your little lovebug?
Thank you, Reagan. I’ve seen spanish moss only once and I still dream of it. I’m in Utah. None here.
Now I’ve got to figure out a way to get my husband to think that going to SC for a vaca was his idea.
Thinking….thinking……..thinking…………..
Who told you they filmed Forrest Gump there? He didn’t know what he was talking about. Ha Ha Great posts and a great vacation.
You were so close to my house when you were at the Cotton Dock! It’s always nice to hear that people from other areas appreciate all of the magnificent things that make up this wonderful place. Glad you could visit!
you can say on the final picture ‘are you happy to see me or is that a sail boat between my legs?’
Beautiful place for a getaway! Thanks for sharing.
Reading about how when we went sailing is almost as fun as when we actually went sailing. almost.
Another one of the great places of Charleston! Boone Plantation is simply magnificent. I am not much of a butterfly garden girl, but even that was amazing. Truly believe you could explore the region every single day for a year and never see everything. A little rain can’t even spoil the experience. Charleston is magical. Doesn’t hurt that they are some of the nicest people.
Where did you get that cute shirt you wore at the plantation? Love it!!
I was married for 20 years to a man with a sail boat, who loved and lived to sail. I loathed it. While he sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii, I flew there and lounged on the beach to greet him upon arrival. Never before has sailing looked remotely fun to me until I saw your pictures of you all enjoying the ride. What a great time you all seem to be having.
Aww you made me miss Charleston. Shhh dont tell my husband that though. We lived there for a year but it was just too far from all our family in utah. Thanks for the pictures!
Ahoy! I’m a sailor! I sail! excellent lines
