In an attempt to make going outside more pleasant for Pippy’s sensitive eyes, I bought her a little sunhat (thanks for the suggestion Kayla!). It backfired. Know why? I covered the Pip in sunscreen and she got some in her eyes while shielding the sun with her hands. It was so so so bright outside for little Piper Jane, even with the hat. She isn’t used to natural sunlight at all. She was miserable and I felt so terrible. She just curled into a ball and hid like a little hermit. After wiping her eyes with a washcloth, we finally gave up and came back inside. She was tired and not happy. We struck out.
The good news is that she looked like a freakin’ padington (pippington) bear in her little hat and we all melted. Every one of us at blythedale. Nurses, security guards, patients and parents melting out of no where. Because Piper Jane looking like a granny with her walker and a paddy with her hat is too much.
We came back to her room and she quickly found her monkey card, blanket and took a mean nap. It was about time.
ps, stay tuned, because we took her out again today and it went much much MUCH better. Bye!

I love reading your post about your sweet little girl. And the pictures, she is just the cutest. I love the that her spirit comes through. Thanks for sharing. Joyce
MELT. seriously.
I had some wrap around sunglasses the velcroed in the back for my little ones. Do you think she would leave them on?
P.S. Melting in Colorado.
Count me among the melting! Too much, Pip!
Your sweet little Pipster has caused a mass break-out of Melt! Add Virginia into the melt storm!
Cute, CUTE!!!!
I’ve been reading your blog since your post on Design Mom and I just love reading about your adorable little Pip. Yes — she is TOO cute in the little hat. The sunscreen in the eye issue happens at least once to every mom (per kid .. lol!). I love your hair blog too — I’ve bought the Wonder Waves and Batiste (GREAT for camping) so far!
This may be an obvious sugestion and you have probably already tried it but what about a pair of little sunglasses? She would be super cute in sunglasses!
Aww Piper, I’m the same way in the sun, I can’t go out without sunglasses! Cloudy days aren’t so bad in my opinion.
@Christie:
OMG she would look SO cute with little sunglasses. She is a special little girl and her story just melts my heart! We are melting in Utah today as well.
Ah, it’s a bummer she didn’t enjoy her time in the sun. But on the bright side, that hat is just too dang cute! Yes, it is a little Paddington Bear hat! You need to get her the jacket in the fall to complete the look.
She is sooo darling. Here’s a link for sunglasses that might work, http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Banz-Retro-Kidz-Sunglasses/dp/B002SW3E2Y/ref=pd_sbs_a_1
Oh my soul. I made it through all the pics (the second and third had me dewy-eyed) without really crying, and then lost it on the last one. What a dollbaby. So tired, Mommy. Precious Piper pulls a Paddington!
I LOVE the Paddington Pip look! I wish she had enjoyed it more, poor baby. Reagan, thanks so much for sharing with us! Your writing makes me want to come back every day, and I feel honored to get to see pictures of Piper too!
i love the combo of paddington and a granny! it must equal extreme cuteness!
ps looove the new header! do you mind sharing who made it?
Even though Piper had the sun in her eyes, she still looked so cute in all her pictures! How does she do it?
Awww, lil Miss Pippin is soooo cute–gotta love the Pippington Bear look lol! I feel bad she got sunscreen in her eyes but am glad you guys got to spend time together and that the next visit was better for her!
Thanks for sharing her with us, Reagan and Jake! Makes me wanna catch the next flight to New York (no worries i’m not a freak or a stalker lol) and just give Piper Jane a big ol hug!
Wow, I’m melting too, and I live in Canada so I know it’s not the heat! That little Paddington Piper is about the cutest thing EVER.
Found you via Cjane and have loved reading about sweet little Piper Jane–my two year old begs to see her pictures. We are so inspired by your famliy! If you buy kids sunscreen, it is usually tear free–works great for us!
Now she needs some Audrey Hepburn style sunglasses to complete the look! ( and to protect her sensitive eyes) Too cute!
hi Reagan! She is so yummy cute – LOVE THE HAT!
Piper Jane is the cutest little girl in the world (don’t tell my daughter I said that!). I love the pictures — her hat is adorable and her expressions are priceless!
Miss Piper is Rockin her New Hat, so Sorry about the Sunscreen, ugh,Ive had that happen to me before and it does sting. Love the Polka Dots, she looks like a Little Polka Dot “Pipsie” So Sweet… Jamie
Cursed Suncreen and it’s eye-rubbing sting. We’ve had that happen no less than a gazillion times with our little folk. Daggammit. That is the worst.
Thought, the cuteness of the sunhat does, somehow make it all better. Sweet pip! You have such a good, clever, and stylish mama!
PB. piper breinholt. paddington bear. sigh. perfection. again. nap in your lap? she’s such a little dreamboat. xoxoxo
I wish Piper knew what an inspiration she is. I hope you know what an inpiration you are. You three are amazing. Thank you.
Oh and oh! Little Pip in her hat is almost too much! The sugary sweetness of those pics is almost dripping out of my computer screen! Seriously, she is just precious, and I am so happy to hear that the 2nd attempt at going outside was better.
Hugs!
Linda P.
Love her! Just wanted to say we’ve had issues with sunscreen as well. Johnson and Johnson makes one in a yellow tube that I think my kids could squirt directly in their eyes and it wouldn’t bother them. It’s the only one I’ve found that doesn’t give us red puffy eyes ever!
Reagan,
I’m relatively new to your blog and although I have never commented before I felt compelled to do so today. Did you know that you are an inspiration? Each and every blog post of yours brings me to tears. The way you love and adore your sweet Piper, the way you are faithful to her and dote on her, the fierce devotion you and your husband have to her well being. It is so humbling to watch at a distance and I just wanted you to know that I am blessed to be among those who are witnessing your life. Thanks for being an amazing mom and for sharing your journey with all of us.
Love,
Ashley
HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY NOT MELT!!! This pictures and the hat are just too much. cuteness!
I think you are simply wonderful….our daughter is 10 and can’t wait to read about your darling daughter. She even asked…”next we go to NYC can we visit her?”. Oh, and thanks for the “wonderful” man grilled-cheese…I told our sons and husband about it and they are begging me to make it!
FYI…nothing better than messy hair…mine was a messy hair day today!
I’m worried about that beloved monkey card – it will be loved to shreds – can I send you some laminating sheets so that it will last and last?? I’m a weirdo, I know.
i usually reserve “I DIE.” for things of the fashion-nature…
but seriously?
I DIE.
these pictures made my mouth water. (is that weird?)
and, don’t tell jake, but scruffy looks pretty yum on him. (ack! i can’t believe i just said that.)
i can’t wait til my mr. is out of the army & he can have scruff again!
question: how handsome is jake?
answer: very.
ok, firsties- how awesome is pip’s fan following? of course i’m going to be snobbish and act like i KNEW pip WAY before these people did- and it makes me proud. gotta love that pride.
secondlies- how freaking strong are pip’s legs now? is this just me? she looks buff and i love it!
thirdly-imitation is a form of flattery and after reading your posts i find myself making up words. it makes life much more fun i feel : )
*and i will take my girls outside tomorrow for you. even in this forsaken heat i will, just for you.
Such a lil’ diva. How many times can I say, “Pip, you are dashing, ravishing, and fabulous?”
Chandra
Piper is the fashionista!!!
Melting here in Seattle today, although tomorrow it’s going to be 30 degrees lower.
oh my god, that last picture just kills me. i love the pip. she is so cute about that card!
