I bought this little old sailor number for Pippy while I was in Utah. In Utah, they are REAL thrifts stores, meaning this dress was a dollar. I think rent is just too high in NYC for thrift stores to be able to sell things for that cheap.

It’s still a little too big, but that means it will fit her for a long time! Hooray!
I did something epicly stupid. You’ll agree with me.
I set this dress aside so that I could hand-wash it. And then I came accross it a while later and was like ‘oh i never brought this to pip’s house!’.
So I brought it to Pip’s house, thinking it had been washed. But it hadn’t.
Within minutes of putting it on Piper Jane, she began to scratch nonstop. Her face, her arms..but mostly her face. I didn’t figure it out for a long time, probably about an hour that it was the dress. And by that point, Pip’s face was red and her eyes were a little swollen, she was miserable. I still feel awful about it. In the end, after we figured it all out, and gave her some Benadryl, she fell asleep. Hopefully she has forgotten about it. I haven’t.
I started my new job yesterday. I like it so far. The salon is beautiful and everyone is really nice! You should come see me there! I’m at Whittemore House.

itching/scratching/red eye and all, the pip looks pretty cute. can i say ‘the pip’ — i feel like her title needs more than just pip.
the pip.
I love the photos once again! One request…could you post a tutorial on HOF showing us how you do the braid like your wearing it in these photos? I’ve tried to figure it out on my own, but I’m visual and would love to see how you create it!
I love that dress on her…she looks mighty cute as a sailor girl!
Congrats again on the new job. I wish I could come. Waaaay too expensive for me
I wish we had real thrift shops here in NY. In their absence, I live for hand-me-downs for my girls. Kisses to Pip.
Congratulations on your new job. Piper always looks so cute.
She looks so adorable! Don’t feel bad. . . we all do stuff like this sometimes!
So thrift stores in NY are super expensive? Makes sense but still, sad.
She is darling Reagan! I love the dress, you totally scored big on it.
I need some shoes like pipers for this saturday…can I borrow hers
Shes so cute!
i’m pretty sure that is the prettiest salon i’ve ever seen! love it and would love to come and see ya some ny minute. poor piper, that must be the most awful feeling to hurt your child unknowingly. luckily it’s not too bad, right?!!
LOVE Piper as a little sailor girl! She is getting bigger every day!!! The bow holding back her whispy curls just adds another layer of cuteness! Love your blob. good luck with the new salon!
I hear ya about “thrift” stores outside of Utah. I live in Houston and I went to a thrift store to get a pair of overalls for a Halloween costume and they were charging $10!!! What the heck? Anyway, I’m sure the little lady will completely forgive you for not washing her dress when she realizes how incredibly adorable she looks in it
This is my favorite thing about living in Utah! The thrift stores are unreal. What size does little Pippy wear? I will keep my eye out while devouring all the deals…Also I am a faithful reader of your blog and even though I don’t comment, Your post about spending quality time with your little Pip really tugged at my heart. It is obvious you are a great mother in irregular, hard circumstances. Yet, I would bet many of the mothers/readers/comment trolls who sometimes pass judgment on you for what they would or would not do if in your shoes have missed the simplicity of motherhood….Your post demonstrated perfectly what I feel motherhood is. Having a deep connection with your child and knowing that in their eyes no one else is you and I can feel that~ even through the pictures of your little pip gazing at you. It was also a good reminder for me about getting down on the ground and playing with my little girl. Pip is lucky to have you for her mama.
i will come see you soon!!!!!!!!!!
piper looks very nautical. i dig.
I love how you dress her! So darling
It makes me happy to see photos of little Piper. She is adorable
What a cutie! Love the dress.
My girls were 19 months apart. They had matching white with navy sailor dresses (red tie in front) that were so cute. This post brings back so many memories. Congratulations on the new job!
Becca Jeppson’s comment was really sweet! I am also continually impressed by you and your husband Jake…keep up the great work!
P.S. Love the sailor outfit! Very Cute!
I am a new reader to your blog and love your stories of Pip.
While your circumstances are unique, you are a momma, no doubt. I have accidentally caused my children to have allergic reactions, bumps here and there from putting on non-slippy socks and encouraging us to run around the house, and lots of other mishaps. Benadryl saved the day from your itchy dress-a-pa-looza!
I also loved your post about trying to love your situation and the focus you have when you visit Piper Jane. It is a challenge (I am not complaining) to focus in and really BE with my kids when I have work sitting on my desk eight feet away, when the car needs vacuuming and when my cell is ringing with work and personal calls.
Today I got stuck with my 2 year old at the DMV, waiting for a friend to finish her driving test. It was a full hour of nonstop, uninterrupted time with my little girl. I thought of you and Pip and really stayed present. Thanks.
Thanks for your blog. I am not much of a fashionista, so I am always thankful to see that you get things at Target!
Some Day…. I want to come to NY so bad! Maybe I can talk my husband into taking me to a Broadway and you can fix my hair before.
ooooh, i wanna smooch that little pip. okay, and maybe you & turbo too. okay, and your ipad. i really want an ipad.
that last pic of pip & jake? drool. so snuggly & adorable.
p.s. i love your braid. i need hair-doing lessons. the braid will be lesson 2. right after: “how to blow-dry your hair to make you look hot.”
Hi! Whittemore House. That’s fun! I go there (Rubi). But I need color, because this new baby business has made my hair go, um, blonde in parts. Very, very blonde. And I’m a brunette, so random little coughblondecough hairs aren’t a good thing. Anyway. Are you doing color? Or just cuts?
I love your Pip.
Your Pip is adorable, love the little sailor dress.
Also, I’m moving to nyc this summer maybe I can come see ya at your new spot!
I love the sailor dress and Piper looks adorable in it. When she is sitting in Kaske’s lap she always looks so preacefully blissfully pleasingly happy, as if there is no where else on earth she would rather be. Precious.
Congratulations on the new job. Can I can get an appointment when I’m in NYC?
Actually, I am taking a brave step tomorrow. After being blond my entire life I am having my hair done a warm aburn shade tomorrow. I like the shade we went with and hope it looks good on me. The nice thing about hair is that you can always fix it or grow it out. I’m keeping the length.

Love her little sailing self — with a touch of Mama’s influence with a cardigan in the last shot.
Presh.
Yes, I live in nowheresville, West Texas, soon to move to Big City, Texas. While the pickin’s are slim (when you’re in W. TX you have to say ‘pickin’s') at any resale shops, the prices are amazing. People just want to get rid of them. Seriously, the Goodwill shop in my neighborhood is a treasure hunt. You just have to be willing to be patient and dig.
I didn’t say anything on your previous post, either… but how in the world could any of us throw stones at you in a TOUGH situation while you simply find ways to count your blessings. I’m sure someone finds stones to throw, but you make me thank God for my healthy children. So thankful that adorable Piper has an awesome mom like you.
Oh she is so darn cute! Love the little sailor dress! Funny our neighbor got a sailor suit for her baby girl’s 1 yr old birthday and she couldn’t appreciate it…didn’t get it. I love to see a little girl (or boy) in a super cute sailor outfit!
Who is the baby in the background? Does Pip have a roommate?
