have i ever told you that my maiden name is Baker? it fits, because baking is the only thing i can sort of do in the kitchen. i can’t cook anything more complicated than a sandwich or a burrito, but i can usually do a pretty good job in the baking department, especially cookies.
so, since i don’t know a single girl scout, and it’s girl scout cookie season, i decided i needed to make samoas. samoas have always been my favorite gs cook’ and i wondered if i made them, if they would taste as good as the real thing. (spoiler: they did.)
i followed this recipe. they were a lot of work. lots of steps, and lots of hours. i think it took me over 4 hours to make them. but the batch was huge and i will definitely make them again with the intention of sharing or halfing. don’t you love what i bake in? a schwinn teeshirt, my friend’s older sister’s ex husband’s basketball shorts*, and some fake uggs.
guys, they were flipping delicious. i gave my bell’ an ache twice due to eating 3 or 4 at once. i really need to master the art of the 3 bite rule. i have the 3 bite rule mastered if you are talking about gorilla bite standards. something tells me they take massive bites.

tip: i originally planned to drizz’ with a spoon because i didn’t want to waste a plastic bag, but i gave in and it was the fastest thing ever. they turned out so much prettier than the spoon drizzed ones.

sam was a total weirdo and put them on his pizza. jake and sam love to do crazy stuff to their food. jake has eaten a banana/hotsauce burrito before.

after our late night of karaoke, the whole crew (jake, sam, **amanda blair and myself) went to kitchenette for brunch around noonish and then headed up to piper’s house. pippy had just awoken from a nap, and was very groggy. we snuggle for a little while, and i dozed off.
(the entire set of photos at pip’s house were taken by amanda blair and her iphone)
we tried everything to make her smile. jake put this foldable castle on his head. nothing. not even a smirk.
i put the foldable castle on my head. no reaction.
then jake put her on his shoulders and she immediately beamed.
we took her on a walk and she smiled a bunch. then amanda blair helped me give pip a bath, and get her ready for bed. it is a long process with all her trach care and all. it was nice having a friend there to see what we do. also, it is always a rare and special treat to be at blythedale at night. it’s quiet and cozy and pip is extra snuggly.
however, we definitely paid for it when we spent almost an hour looking for a parking spot when we got back into the city. parking is nearly impossible any time after 4 pm.
Sunday morning we ran the Coogan’s 5k. It was a fun little race even though it was pouring rain the whole time. i think i’ve only run 3 races in the rain..a 10k, a half marathon and now a 5k. it makes it kind of fun and memorable. ps, someone was holding up a sign at the last mile saying “run faster, Charlie Sheen is winning!”. Haha.
Then we had brunch with Joe and Jen and Abby and relaxed all day long.
I had a great and very long visit with my little pipsqueak girl today. I have a few photos of her acting a fool. Soon to come.
*isn’t it so funny that i have these shorts? i was thinking about where i got them and who they used to belong to and i started cracking up like a crazy jackle…whatever a jackle is. i lived with my best friend’s older sister for like a month about 8 years ago, and that’s how i got the beautiful shorts. thanks dustin pearce. i’m sorry i stole your shorts from the laundry basket. i also stole a handful of quarters to buy a bean burrito from taco bell once.
**amanda blair and i have grown up sleep overs. it is the most genius thing ever. she lives far away in a neighborhood called Murray Hill, so if we are hanging out late at all it is likely we’ll talk her into a sleep over. we pull out the hida and chat all night to a nice, hot cup of tea. it is so fun, guys.

The Pip pics are so fantastic. And I love that you can give her a bath and get her ready for bed and snuggle.
Those cookies look AMAZING. I wanted to reach through the screen and grab one!!
And of course the best part of the whole post was the mere sliver of a reference to Charlie Sheen!
I bet you could run that race with your tigers blood and Adonis DNA….you were WINNING!!
My first thought was: she did NOT make those cookies!! But then I looked closer and realized that they looked less processed and, well, real (& I’m salivating)!! You truly are a BAKER!!!!
Your cookies look incredible! And now I want one and don’t have one. I guess that makes me jeal. Baker, indeed! And I absolutely love that picture of you and Jake and Piper all cozied up together. Definitely frame-worthy, that one.
Wow, those cookies look totally yum! I’m thinking I wouldn’t eat ‘em on pizza, though . . . . : D Oh, I’m glad you finally got Miss Pippy to smile when you visited her. How great to have such a good friend as Amanda. When I accidentally called her “Rachel” in a comment on your Oscar post, she sweetly wrote a very nice response to me in another comment so that I wouldn’t feel bad. I’m glad you two have such fun together.
I really liked your post today…cookies (look awesome), Pip, friends, and run, a nap, and a sleepover, + karaoke, seriously liking your weekend.
Those cookies look delicious! Samoas are my favorite, and I’m definitely making these sometime when I have an afternoon to kill or an uncontrollable craving. Whichever comes first. Thanks for sharing the recipe! They look beautiful!
those cookies look AMAZINGg!
Piper is such a cutie.
Also, I’m moving to the New Jersey area in April–where are you working? I would love to get my hair done by you. My mom has once and she loved what you did!

Okay, this is the SECOND post I’ve read today about homemade samoas and I’m freakin jeal!!! (In case you were wondering, they were different recipes.) Lemme know next time you make them, I wanna help! I’m sorta like you in the kitchen, I can bake, but cook? Eh.
Love the family photo with Pip.
Reagan, I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now and it’s time you knew…I absolutely love it! I look forward to it everyday, and I really admire you & your family. The writing and the photos are always so fun!
Although our situation doesn’t even compare to your cutie Piper, I also have a daughter who was in the hospital long-term, so I totally identify with those struggles. My Sophie spent 5 months in the NICU after she was born at 23 weeks. She is 3 1/2 now, and teeny–it’s always so interesting for me to see kids her age at all different stages.
Congratulations on a wonderful family, career, and writing!
oh my word!!! YUM. reags, youve outdone yourself. and samoas are my fave and i dont know a single girl scout either.
Your cookies look delicious!! I will be dreaming about them while sitting at the hospital all day tomorrow, keeping my mom company and encouraging her to do everything the PT and OT instruct her to do.
Pip is too cute. I love the picture of the 3 of you–beautiful family.

They were freaking delicious and I don’t think girl scout cookies are even half as good as yours were.
I love our sleep overs too! I think I’m just going to bring some PJ’s and a change of clothes to your house so I have them there haha.
Oh I ran Coogan’s too! So soggy. I saw a guy who looked kinda like Jake but who knows if it was him. Also, I’ve had the Thin Mints recipe from that website saved for a while, and I think it may be time to try it.
Your cookies look SO good! All the pics at Pip’s house turned out so cool. Looks like such an awesome weekend!
Okay, first of all, grown-up sleepovers are like the best thing ever, for sure. Second, how great that you posted this recipe today! My fiance was just telling me that those are his favorite girl scout cookies so I think I am going to have to make them for him. Or just give him the recipe to make, but whatever. Thanks for sharing
Love your blob Reagan!! Amanda’s photos are beautiful. I especially love the one of you resting with Piper and the way you are holding her delicate little hand–it really is precious and that’s not a word I throw around everyday! Also-the family shot. The way Jake has his arms around you and Piper–wonderful!
I love those cookies to! I’m going to make some and I’m really excited. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I sure miss you and your sweet family. Please give em’ kisses for me
