Two weeks ago I went to work dressed like Cher from Clueless. I didn’t do it on purpose, but while I was on the train I noticed that I was wearing a velvet mini dress straight out of the 90s, knee highs, and patent leather platforms. It was like, suddenly Cher lives in Manhattan and takes the A train to work.
At work all day we were joking around with some of the golden lines from Clueless. “Hello! It was his 50th birthday!”, “I do NOT wear polyester hair!”, “Dion and I are friends because we both know what it’s like to have people be jealous of us.”, “You are a snob and a half.”…I could go on all day.
Anyway. After work, I took my Cher-y A’ out on the town for fashion’s night out with Jen. We went to a few parties in Soho and felt way too old for the scene. I guess fashion’s night out is now for teenagers or something. We went to Kate Spade and died over all the karaoke singers on the stage. People who poured their heart out with the wise words of Pat Benetar, a girl who stripped teased to “somewhere over the rainbow” and a group of cute sporty girls doing a choreographed dance and rap to a little Salt and Peppa. We hung around until it was time to leave and then wandered far enough to attempt getting a cab.
Oh, the weirdest thing happened too! Did y’all ever watch the show called “9 by design” on Bravo? Well, Jen and I were walking and we heard a child singing Oasis’ Wonderwall inside a restaurant. We walked closer and since it was such a nice night they had all these french doors open so you could see right into the place. Well, the oldest Novogratz child was singing a capella in front of everyone in the whole restaurant! People were cheering and clapping and it really seemed as though he just ran up to the band and stole the mic so he could sing his own song. It was the strangest thing! The whole family was there laughing and dancing in their seats as the son/brother sang, and as soon as wonderwall was over he went right into “Roxanne” by the Police! Jen and I sat there with our mouths open. It was weird enough that a kid was just randomly singing these songs in a fancy restaurant where he clearly wasn’t supposed to be singing, but it was even funnier that it was this kid and his whole family from a reality show I used to watch!
Next we made it over to Mcdougal st and a random celebrity who is friends with Jen (whose name i shouldn’t mention because they work together a lot) saw us from his vespa while he was driving by and slammed on his breaks for a quick chat with us. Bizarre.
The final paragraph in this strange story….to cap off the night and to make my Cher outfit perfectly poetic…We were trying to get a cab, on 6th ave and we waited on the corner for what felt like a year, when guess who walks up next to me to get a cab too….
Yep, Mr. Hall. Cher’s teacher.
I couldn’t believe it. There I was, dressed like Cher. And there he was, dressed like Mr. Hall. I was this close to saying “I was riding the crimson wave! I had to haul ass to the lady’s!” when we finally got a cab. Which was probably for the best. Because while I thought I was incredibly clever, he might not have agreed.
The end.
(let me explain the top picture. someone had thoughtfully written “leghead” on the wall on Mercer in Soho. i couldn’t help but think that i could turn street art into performance art and imediately demonstrated my best leghead position..while dressed as Cher.)

“isn’t my house classic? these columns date all the way back to 1976!” and a mr. hall moment: “so does anyone have final thoughts on cher’s oration?” elton: “yeah. i lost my cranberries cd. i gotta get to the quad before anyone snags it.” i watched that movie over and over and over again on vhs when i was younger!! i desperately wanted to be cher.
Glad you had such an awesome night “rollin’ with the homies, rollin’ with the homies.”
You saw Vizzini??? Inconceivable!!!
Mel: Do you know what time it is?
Cher: A watch doesn’t really go with this outfit, Daddy.
You have GOT to tell us who the mystery celebrity is.
I adore the Novogratz family! I actually follow their design blog- and I’m pretty sure the video at the end of their latest post will be a bit of deja vu fer ya! (You’re adorable as always. Lots of love to the little one!)

wait. so…did you really see mr.hall at the end? or is that just a practical joke/exaggeration? my sarcasm radar is busted. plus, i just saw a commercial for this weird new tv show with rachel bilson that’s on the country music channel (which seems SO weird), making me feel like i can’t trust anything anymore. um, hello?! rachel bilson is way more OC than Tennessee. duh. seriously confused.
so funny i sat next to shawn wallace at brunch in the west village years ago and we tried to get the waiter to say ‘inconceivable’ when he paid his bill but it was a no go. he’s so cute!
Very fun post!
I LOVEed this post! Such fun you have! …and I totally wanted to be Cher when I was in middle school…I’d guilt trip my mother into buying me Cher inspired clothes on our weekly Saturday mall trip.
Amazing! I love that movie and Cher gave me a love of knee socks and plaid mini skirts that will never die!
Also, I love the first picture! Showing off your flexibility skills..get it girl!
Too many awesome references to even mention them all! But seeing those Novogratz’s is awesome, they fascinated me in a bizarre way on that show and I miss them!! And Cher….”should I leave a note?!” YAY
I am laughing my ass off. I just watched that movie again lately and you hit all the best lines. My other fave is when she crashes into the car while she’s driving and says “ooh…should I leave a note?”
Apparently Gosling is also now the East Village’s resident peacemaker (just read this article…haven’t looked up the video it refers to in the opening paragraph yet, but I’m super curious now!)
My awesome html skills failed me- here’s the url for the article.
