Do you like apples?

While Jake was in Chicago, my girlfriends and I decided we would go apple picking upstate. We started off with a nice dose of Piper Jane, which probably wasn’t all that fun for Jen/AmandaBlair since Piper Jane has been especially clingy towards me recently. But we all sat in her crib with her while she sat on my lap and held my hand. We’ve been “Miss Suzi”ing so much lately, I’ll have to get it on video. BTW, Jen grew up singing “Miss LUCY” instead of “Miss Suzi”. I never heard such a thing.

I haven’t been apple picking since I was a wee little lass. We went to an apple orchard just 30 or 40 miles north of Pip’s house after the visit. It was so crowded. The funny thing, is that the actual apple picking wasn’t that crowded. We walked freely and had our choice of apple trees to pick from. It was the fresh apple cider donuts line that was packed. I was surprised to find out that the donuts were what people came all that way for and I heard orders of 2 and 3 dozen.

We got some donuts to split and I guess I can see the fuss.

We had a jolly good time. We of course found a little trouble (no climbing trees huh? watch us.), we danced to some sort of wonderful hillbilly music, we picked out pumpkins, juggled apples, climbed more trees and made up lots of apple songs.

Apples in a bag, we’ve got apples in a bag. Apples in a bag, we’ve got apples in a bag.

I was surprised to see so many cute apples. Like this one…with the stem and the leaves. Too cute.

We used this contraption to help us get the high up apples. I was the best at it. DBJ.

(this is not real juggling. it’s the old hand off. i have never learned to juggle and frankly i don’t care to.)

The apple picking contraption proved to be exhausting, so Jen climbed a tree and tossed some down. It was easier, faster, more efficient, and not to mention against the rules..so also more fun with a splash of danger.

Then we made a pie and an apple crumble and apple soup and apple salad.

The end.

PS I’m happy to report that no trees threw apples at us like that scary part on the Wizard Of Oz. Thank goodness, because I would have just lost it right then and there.

Also I must quote the great movie “Good Will Hunting”.

Will Hunting “Do You Like Apples?”
D-bag from bar “What?”
Will Hunting “I said, Do You Like Apples?”
D-bag from bar “Yeah”
Will Hunting “Well I got her numbah. How do you like THEM apples?”

For someone who took trapeze school I’m surprised juggling is not something you are interested in…….

  • Love them apples from Good Will Hunting!

    Perfect quote!

And yeah….you dress fancier for apple picking than I dress for…well, basically anything.

    I must remedy this ASAP.

There is a reason why climbing the trees is not allowed, especially by adults. The branches could be broken, and that would impact the orchard owner. Also, what do you think would happen if my boys saw adults climbing trees after I just explained to them that they could not? Really immature and inconsiderate behavior. And lastly, who dresses like that to go apple picking?

  • Comment from Reagan Breinholt

Michelle, you’re right. I hadn’t really thought of that. We of course were careful not to stand or hold on to any flimsy branches. And we werent swinging from limbs like monkeys. I was mostly joking, but we did get in the trees for less than 2 minutes. While I do agree that it was immature, I still think climbing trees and getting exercise is a better influence than ordering 3 dozen donuts for my obese family. So I’m not completely awful. As for my outfit. I really don’t see the problem. I mean, I honestly don’t.

  • Comment from clothing police

Reagan is wearing shorts, a teeshirt, boots and a furry vest. Is that inappropriate picking clothes? Im confused too. Maybe the hat makes it look fancier that it is? Either way, I like it. Im going to wear a fancy hat to walk my dog right now!

I forgot the exclamation point at the end of the sentence. It was totally meant as tongue-in-cheek. You might have said the same thing about me if you had seen me at the apple orchard a few days ago. I was rockin the hiking shoes, jeans, sweater and ponytail with no make-up because the morning had been crazy look. I only wish I could look as cute as you and your friends!

I did this every year in MN. I miss it. Maybe I should try to find something here. Looks like so much fun.

Miss Lucy?! Miss Lucy?? Come on guys, there has to be somebody who said Miss Lucy. I’m pretty sure Suzi stole Lucys boat anyway.

I love apple picking…and I totally think of that scene from the Wizard of Oz whenever I go to…the stuff of nightmares!

  • Comment from jenny page

@ Jen: Suzy? Who the heck is Suzy? Of course, it was LUCY!!! I’m quite sure Lucy would have something to say about her song being taken if she knew. Suzy should be ashamed. Jenny Page

Ummm… yeah-climbing in people’s apple trees is totally rude. And immature. And we get it – you are extremely proud of yourself for being skinny. That makes you a waaaaay better person than someone who isn’t and eats doughnuts.

  • Comment from Holly

One time (like last weekend) I went apple picking and the trees DID throw apples at us, except really it was a little boy (not so little that he didn’t know better, but whatevs) throwing apples through the trees. But the first thing I thought of was the Wizard of Oz and I sort of freaked.

  • Comment from Jen

@jenny page: Thank you Jenny Page, I knew there was someone else sane out there.

You girls are too cute, and I love it!
The donuts sound great, but here it’s the pumpkin cookies with icing that are my main reason for going to the farm/orchard/market/whatever they want to call it as long as the treats are yummy.

Great pictures! I’m dying to do some fall things. Also, I’ve never heard of Miss Suzi. It’s always been Miss Lucy for me.

Looks like you had so much fun! Have any special plans for the apples?

  • Comment from Bonny

hahah..with a splash of danger..love that. I also just watched Good Will Hunting for the first time the other night my husband and I cracked up.

  • Comment from Amanda Blair

Wow, who knew apple picking would be so controversial. Our outfits are awesome and we looked cute, so don’t hate on our cuteness everyone. Also, we ate A LOT of doughnuts so stop hating on that too. Everyone just stop hating and go pick some apple, it will make you feel better!

  • Comment from Rae

Okay, I know that you don’t like when people get all crazy in your comments in your defense, but I can’t help it. Michele’s question of what is she supposed to do when her boys ask her why they’re not allowed to climb the trees when they see adults doing it reminded me of a situation I was in as a teen. I wish I’d had the guts to stand up for myself then. I was in a two piece (not even a bikini, just a two piece) at the community pool when a mother from my church said, “How am I supposed to explain to my daughters they have to wear one pieces when they see you wearing a two piece?” I just felt dumb. What I WISH I would have said was, “Well, you explain to them those are your rules and they are your children, and that I am not. I am Debbie’s child, and if Debbie decides to let me wear a two piece, that is her choice.”
Michele, take it as a wonderful opportunity to teach your children about rules and how some people break rules and maybe they’ll be punished or maybe they’ll get away with it and nothing will happen. Or do what my mom did and say, “Those are adults and they make their own decisions. When you’re an adult you can make your own decision too.” Reagan is not responsible for raising your children, you are.
And she climbed a freaking tree, she didn’t stab anyone (or say rude things to them….ahem.”
    Good lord…

We always used Ms. Lucy here in the south and if you want something really good, in the south we get fried apple pies along with the donuts and thats why you drive an hour to the orchards!!!

  • Comment from Michele

    Rae,
I think you are more worked up over my comments than Reagan was, but okay. Just because I have a different opinion doesn’t make me a bad person or a negative nelly. I live in MA in a town with a lot of apple orchards. We just went on a field trip with my son’s school to one of them. This orchard is small and family-owned, and the owner talked to the kids before picking and explained to them that they shouldn’t climb the trees, break the branches and also instructed on the correct way to pick the apples. He works hard every day and counts on the trees to be treated safely, so he can have another crop next year. That was my point. These trees really are someone’s livelihood and should be treated with respect. If you were to go into a clothing store/boutique and treated the clothing with carelessness and disrespect, you would probably be asked to leave. I am not picking on Reagan, I say this about anyone. And, yes, last time I checked I am aware that I am raising my kids and that is way I take the time to explain respectful behavior to them.

    I agree with Rae!

This post oddly makes me want to pick apples… or maybe just eat a warm apple crisp with ice cream. Yum!!
