silliness and smiles

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 posted by Reagan at 9:16 PM
piper jane handed out smiles left and right all weekend. lacy was having her dance around and was singing old songs, which pip could hardly contain herself over. she was laughing and smiling so big. probably the biggest ever. there was a streak that she smiled for probably two minutes straight. i'm pretty sure this is a mom thing, but do you ever look at your kid's pictures (piptures) and laugh all week over them? that is what i do with pretty much any smile pipture of pippy. they are just too much for me to not giggle about.

giggle one

giggle two

giggle million

giggle infinity

standing city....piper is a standing pro. she is getting so good at it!

look how stable she is!

when we were saying our goodbyes i started to get a little sad. so i picked my sweet nugget up for a squeeze, which is usually forced upon her (she really just likes to sit in my lap and for me to hold her, but not many kisses or any hugging) and was shocked into a frenzy that Piper Jane laid her head on my shoulder like this! then she got really comfortable and rested on her hand. she stayed like that until i put her back in her crib. this is a first. let it be known. she loves me. booyah.

a little bit of a picture overload, i know. i'm just so proud of her though, i want announce my pippy pride on a megaphone.

pipture catch up. it's been a few.

i realized that i have had several piper-less posts. so here is one that you will find very pippy-filled.

piper jane loves the vols. she also loves the utes. we'll wait til she can talk to tell us which she likes better.she was very sleepy this day. it was fun to just relax.

standing therapy. can any of you believe it that my piper will be walking some day? i think soon. also, old man shoe alert (and ankle brace)!
in her head, piper jane is thinking 'i'd like to see my mama stop me from chewing on my pulse/ox when she's got that camera in her hands.' can you believe my saucy minx of a babe?

this picture is quite old. before she got that nasty cold even. my friend stacey bought pipster j this skirt. i would like to be more like stacey. you know, go around thinking about doing nice things for others. i mostly like doing nice things for myself. but i'm learning.

today we had music therapy. i've never been able to see it! it warmed my heart to see the woman come in with her guitar and how the kids reacted. she goes around the room and sings a song for each child. they strum the strings along with her. it's very sweet. when she was coming over to pip (who was in my lap) i was getting curious as to how pip would respond. she knew exactly what to do and started banging on the guitar and strumming the strings just like all the other kids. then she looked back at me with a big grin as if to get my approval. or possibly to make sure i was seeing how musical she is. melt!

since piper's house has been blythedale for over a year, it is easy to get really tired of the routine...plus, not to mention, bored. thankfully there are days like today that help spice things up.

friends come to see pippy

Sunday, September 13, 2009 posted by Reagan at 5:28 PM
carl and becca came to see the wee pip today. they brought her some glow frogs too. do your kids have glow frogs? because they should. piper jane doesn't want to play with anything else...except maybe her dinosaurs.

we came straight after church and had a great time. piper jane loves becca and carl. she has been quite clingy towards me and jake, but she was really warm to both of them...smiling her huge silly smiles at becca, and playing a game with carl that involved her repeatedly throwing her frogs on the floor for carl to pick up. <-i never said it was a nice game.

and...not to be selfish, but piper jane and i are complete buds. sometimes when we are sitting on the floor and facing each other, she will reach for me, stand up and do a tricky swivel around to sit on my lap. she knows how to pull a fast one on me. i always give in and let her stay.

i was bouncing pips on my knee and she started to crack up.

she smiled harder and harder

until she couldn't stand it and had to nuzzle.
please note that there is nary a picture of pip without one or more frogs in her hands. she scored big today.

finally

yay, the picture uploading worked for once. these pictures were taken on tuesday during my visit. i love every one of these.

this is piper in her new bandana from bodhi kids. her aunt sarah sent it to her. it's a little big still, but i love it so much. it reminds me of this, which is a very good slogan for our little family. bodhi kids is currently empty because the coolest shop in ketchikan has asked to have it sold in their store. but you should check it out when it's plentiful again, because these scarfs are awesome. i can't wait for it to fit a little better, because pretty much nothing keeps piper's hair out of her face, but this will.
my good little stander
this picture makes me feel guilty. she is reaching for my legs so she can climb up me and into my arms. she is not cool with anything but my undivided attention.
without the bodhi kids scarf, piper had punky brewster hair that day. i guess i was wrong about the hair in her face thing....her nurse definitely found a solution with this wild girl style. hah!

crawling
i want to tell a hilarious story that i summed up as coincidence but have since changed my mind. last weeked, when kim was in town, we were playing with pippy on the floor and melting all over her. kim said something like "oh piper, i wish you would just say something" and immediately piper said "MA!" so loud and clear. it was pretty much a straight-faced yell, which made it even more remarkable and hilarious. we were so shocked and laughed for almost a full hour. it was so perfect! i really have never heard her make any noises that have sounded anything like a word. like i said, i was assuming this was a total coincidence, but why not just go ahead and flatter myself by claiming "ma" was piper's first word. because like a little southerner, piper will call me "mama" just like I call mine. that's just how it's going to be..

piper jane has a playdate

Sunday, August 2, 2009 posted by Reagan at 8:59 PM
it was precious from beginning to end. penelope tried to put stickers on piper's face, hair and trach tubes. piper tried to steal penelope's binkie. adeline smothered piper with hugs. and how about piper's hand on penelope's knee? that is where i just about lost it. i've never seen piper interact with children like she did today. it was like she didn't want much to do with me and was afraid of me embarrassing her in front of her friends. these three girls are as sweet as they come.

ages 3, 2 and 1

reading a bargain for frances to the girls. i loved this book when i was a small kiddie. adeline is curling up with some cheese chickadees and piper looks like she can't wait to find out what happens next.

seeing piper play with her friends made me think all day about how much i want her to come home so we can do it more often. i feel so guilty leaving my wee P when she is clearly having the time of her life. for the last little bit i have felt content with her being at blythedale, but that is wearing off and i am missing her more and more when i'm not there. i think she gets bored during the day and really looks forward to our time together. did i ever tell you that that is what i've always wanted? to know that piper loves me and wants me around? that is what i got and it feels like a million bucks. but now i want more, ok?

good news, good news, party time, excellent....

Friday, July 17, 2009 posted by Reagan at 2:41 PM
first comes the good news. starting in august, i will only be working half days on tuesdays....so i can see piper one more day a week. this is huge news. i have been working on this for over a month and i wasn't sure it would work out. i am thrilled. piper is too.

today i was shocked at piper's size. she is looking more and more like a little girl, and less like the little nubbins i once had to dress in micro-premie duds. it was only 6 months ago that she started sitting up and was so toppley. now she sits perfectly without even a wiggle, and she can stand!

little birdie has recently discovered kicking up her dogs and lounging back. she will lay back like this (hair flowing beneath her), look up at the ceiling and tap something gently. i like to picture what she is thinking about. 'how many things can one pip tap in a day? why does marcus kick his bed so hard? what happened to my sleeping beauty dvd? is my dad ever going to let my mama buy those black heels she wants?'

next up. suh-weet therapy sesh today. Karen swears piper performs best when i'm around. she wants to impress me, i guess.

excuse me for basically falling to pieces over these old man shoes. click any of the pictures below to see them big. i wish so badly i could take credit for them, but they were bought for her by blythedale therapy. they are more than a few sizes too big because they need to fit her splints inside (splints are covered by trousers).
such a big girl.
ok, again with the old man stuff. but seriously, all she is missing to become my pah-pah joe is a sunday paper and a pipe. her long-ness and lean-ness is a little more grandpa miles, in which case we swap the pipe with a gardening tool.
i am so proud of this girl. also, in a room of therapists, a few doctors and her nurse, it was clear that piper strongly preferred my company to theirs. booya! excuse me while i go gloat for ten years.

ps pipsey got a new cousin yesterday. asher wallace, hooray!

the day that almost sucked.

Saturday, May 30, 2009 posted by Reagan at 6:33 PM
I woke up this morning with the blues. The Brooklyn half marathon that I have been signed up/looking forward to for months was this morning and my head cold was still here. I decided sadly that I would be miserable running with a stuffy nose and an achy body...so I didn't go. For a short while I was happy to not have to leave the house at 5:30, but then when I woke up around 7:00 for real, I actually contemplated hopping in a cabbie and hauling-a to brooklyn. I mean, all my friends were going. I love Brooklyn. And it finished at Coney Island (i can't believe I haven't seen any carnies since last summer). Anyway, I didn't go and I was bummed.

Things started looking up when...

I was going to a clients apartment to do her hair and I noticed a missed call from a 706 area code (Georgia). I was pretty sure it was a wrong number, and even though I was right, the message they left me would have brought the lowest of spirits up:

"hey sis, I'm just calling because....we all miss you terribly. You are just wonderful and I wanted to check in. I love you."

How nice was that? Thanks stranger! I'm sorry it was the wrong number, but I'm sure the real person you were calling didn't need it like I did. So, thanks sis! Whoever you are.

Then, when I was at my beautiful client's apartment, who is a set/shoot stylist for the designer Bottega Venetta, she told me she had gotten a new handbag and would I like her gently used one? Yes please. and thank you. It's so beautiful. It looks similar to this beauty, but without the embellishments. And the flap goes down all the way. Otherwise, it's the exact bag.
I still can't believe it. Some used Bottega bags sell on ebay for $2,000! I'm going to look like an imposter carrying such a nice bag with my lowly clearance rack duds. At least I'll feel fancy!

Last but not least. Piper certainly did not dissapoint. The minute she saw me, she reached for me to pick her up while flashing me the most adorable crooked toothed smile I've ever seen. Every time I tried to put her back to suction her or use the bathroom, she'd immediately start crawling toward me to get her back out. I don't even know what I did to get her to sudennly like me, but...Hooray! She likes me! Yay!

Clingy

Sunday, May 24, 2009 posted by Reagan at 6:21 PM
I don't want to jinx anything, so let's keep this between us......Piper loves me. She loves me so much, I can see it! She wants me to hold her all the time and is now reaching for me, crawling to me and climbing up my arms and chest to get me to pick her up. What an amazing thing! Do you have any idea what that is like? You probably do. Doesn't it kick-a? I like to think of it as an evaluation to my parenting and Pip is just letting me know that I passed.

Let me document that the first time the reach/crawl/shirt-climb up mama's chest happened was May 11th 2009. It is now happening often and I can't stop thinking about it. Sometimes a little reach/crawl/shirt-climb up mama's chest is all you need to feel like everything is going to be ok. So what that it took 2 years to get a little feedback?

The only downside is that this new clingy-ness makes me never want to leave her.
