Merry Christmas!

Let’s talk about how busy the Breinholts have been. We have both been working a lot. We weren’t ever able to take family pictures in time to send out cards, so we took some the week before Christmas hoping to at least post them on my blog/facebook for our friends/families on Christmas day. But then we didn’t have enough time to go through and edit them! So, I’ve been a little sad about all the stuff I had planned that never ended up happening.

But, Christmas was still great you guys! Was yours? We have some of the most amazing pictures that Pip ever posed for, but those are on the camera still too! She was so adorable with her new toys and I can’t wait to show you all. In the meantime, here are a few iphone pictures, because that’s all I have time for this morning. Humph.

On Christmas Eve, Jake and I met up with my good friend Stefani and her brother and his girlfriend and Amanda Blair for some karaoke. The subway was empty!

Karaoke is always fun at this place. “We have all song you want!”

We obviously weren’t out late because we got out the door at 7 to hang with Pip. Like I said, she was the cutest cutest ever with her presents. Jake took some video that you’ll see along with the real pics later.

We had a late brunch (4pm) that was delicious. I made two kinds of quiche, cheese grits and buttermilk biscuits.

I have tons to blog this week! In the meantime, here is an adorable video of Piper Jane loving some Christmas singing by me and Stef.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

One of my favorite things about Piper Jane’s new room is that it’s much quieter. Hospitals tend to be pretty loud between the beeping machines and the nurses and kids hollering to each other, phones ringing, TVs…it’s not a very relaxing atmosphere. But there is something really different about her new room. I think it has something to do with the fact that there are just two kids in there, so nurses are coming in less and there aren’t so many family members around. Even though Piper Jane is used to the noise, I swear she is sleeping more peacefully. While I took these pictures with my phone I sang her a little song.

In the village, the peaceful village the Piper sleeps tonight. (but I left out the annoying Uh-Wwwwwhhheeeee part)

I love her mane.

My cute little lion sleeper.

I have a question, Piper Jane loves her blanky more than anything else in the ever-loving world. She used to have a back up that she knew was different, but accepted it when her first love was in the wash. Unfortunately it got lost.

I’ve looked high and low for a replacement, or better yet, a duplicate blanky for her, but have never been able to find the right match. It needs to be all baby pink, with minky (and textured dots) on one side, and soft silk on the other.

Is there a good sewer out there with access to these fabrics? Can anyone make Piper Jane a back up blanky? I fear the day that blanky gets lost and she has nothing to snuggle while I’m not there. It makes me cry to think about it.

Please, I’ll pay you!

You will make my day!

Holiday stories from my childhood: The time bed wetting happened.

My two oldest siblings were away at college for a lot of my childhood. Since there were 6 kids my parents couldn’t really afford for them to come home on random weekends or more minor holidays, but they always came home for Christmas. We all would go ape over seeing them. We would fight over who got to sit next to them at dinner and who was hogging too much of their company. It was all too much for 4 little kids to handle.

One year, I convinced my whole family, and my sister Jody, that she should stay in my room during her trip home. Erin had moved into Jody’s room since she had left, and I had a bunk bed, and I promised to be quiet in the morning and not talk too much when she was trying to fall asleep and she could sleep on whatever bunk she wanted! Who could turn that down?

She agreed! A Christmas miracle!

She chose the bottom. I cleaned my room and my dad helped me string my bunk bed with Christmas lights, which felt extremely hospitable of me. All the other kids were jeal’. The only thing left to do was wait and before I knew it, my cool college sister was wheeling her suitcase into my room and making herself at home while I hung from my bunk bed ladder like a monkey, falling apart with excitement.

I spent the next few days dishing out early 90s disses like “in your face” and “top that” to Erin and Nathan. I had a new confidence surrounding me that came with Jody staying in my room. I strutted around the house knowing that Jody chose me over everyone else and I was a 10 year old on top of the world.

Until I peed the bed. Yes, I peed the bed.

I have replayed the night over and over again. What could I have done differently leading up to the great pee? Was I a victim of a freak accident? All I know is that I was sleeping, minding my own business, dreaming about cute little girl things and then I woke up to that terrible wet warmth. It was horrifying. Thankfully all my rustling around and sheet changing didn’t wake Jody, and I was somehow able to cover up the whole ordeal. But come breakfast and believe you me I was a much more sheepish and less diss dishing little sister.

I learned my lesson the painful way. I like to think I was a sweeter and less boastful child after that. And Santa showed mercy on me and gave me tons of Barbie stuff that year. Including Totally Hair Barbie. My family was clueless to the accident and Christmas was saved.

And I never ever peed the bed again until I was pregnant.

Holiday stories from my childhood: My first adult beverage.

It’s hard to imagine that cute face sneaking a stiff drink.

There was this family in our neighborhood growing up that threw a huge bash every year for Christmas. We would all dress fancy…I would always wear patent black Mary Janes and some sort of huge bow with my hair pulled half up…and prepare for a lovely evening. These people were actually neighbors from our first house in Oak Ridge, and since we had moved I didn’t ever really know the new neighbor kids that were invited. At that age it didn’t matter much, and before I knew it I had new best friends to hang out with.

Every year the adults seemed to get older and older. And every year I couldn’t believe I still had to eat the food at the kids’ table. So one year, I decided I was going to sneak some adult food. It looked so much better. I guess I had sophisticated taste buds at a young age, because crackers and cheese looked way more appealing than the artificially colored stuff at the kids’ table. Or maybe it was just that I had forbidden fruit syndrome.

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I got in line at the adult table, got myself a plate and a napkin and proceeded to serve myself all the delicacies there were to offer. Then I got to the punch bowl. It was a normal color, which was refreshing compared to the alarming green drink that was being served at the other side of the room. I scooped a few ladles into a fancy glass and wandered back over to mingle with my new friends.

I took a sip of my drink and gagged. “What the crap kind of punch is this?” I thought.

My mom taught me not to waste food, and I didn’t want to admit that the wonderful feast at the adult table was anything but, so I decided to keep drinking it. I mean, what kind of guest would I be, offending the hosts punch making skills? I choked it down slowly and steadily, plugging my nose with each gulp.

Finally, someone tapped on my shoulder, a grownup, and said “sweetheart you can’t drink that, it has alcohol in it.” and she snatched it out of my hand and walked away while I stood there in shock.

I thought ‘if she tells on me I’m definitely definitely grounded forever and I can for sure kiss the Barbie Dreamhouse I asked Santa for goodbye.’

The party was officially ruined. I sat there wondering if I was drunk (I wasn’t) and what my mom would say when she figured me out. If she wasn’t allowed to drink alcohol, I certainly wasn’t either. I was a goner.

Welp, my mom never found out (until this post) but unfortunately Santa did, and he held a mega grudge against me (hard core) and never gave me the Barbie Dreamhouse I asked for every year from the age of 5 to 17.

And I never ever drank alcohol again until senior year.

Piper Jane’s new couch.

It’s awesome.
I never knew how much I hated all the rooms she has ever been in her entire life until she moved.

The couch is glorious.

(snow white likes it too)

A nerdy little photo shoot.

Hairdresser at Tiffany’s.

For about a year I’ve wanted to update Hairdresser on Fire. I have had this vision of black and white photos in the header and having really dramatic lighting. I don’t know what took so long, but we finally shot a bunch of images for it on Monday night. It will probably be a few weeks still before the new look is up, because we are both so busy, but I’m so excited. I love taking photos with Jake. It always goes the same way…in the beginning I’m not really feeling it..I get impatient and have to be talked into continuing. Then we get a good flow and start having a good time. Then neither of us want to stop and we are literally looking around the room and brainstorming for new ideas so we can keep going. The above pictures wont be in the header, but it was one of those last minute ideas Jake had. “Use your comb like Holly Golightly’s cigarette! Put on sunglasses!”.

It’s funny, I know Jake and I both have our “real” jobs away from each other, but we still work together a lot and I definitely consider us business partners as well as in love partners. I never really imagined working together, and it’s cool/funny to look back and see how it has slowly, naturally fallen into place this way.

It’s better than mangoes.

Pip’s move.

(A very pensive Pip)

The move went well. Piper Jane’s new room is nice and huge and the couch is close enough to her bed that all of her tubes reach. It’s pretty adorable to have the three of us all sitting on it together. It’s a home-like feeling that we’ve never really experienced. Jake and I will sit there chatting, and Pip is nestled in-between us happily playing with her toys. I like it.

It’s been a long time since I’ve put up some nice piptures of my pip. Jake has loved playing with her with no worries of bringing the camera, and when I’m there I generally snap with my phone or a point and shoot. Having the big camera on our walks is worth it once in a while, because we can find pretty light and catch these moments where Piper Jane is almost adult like. The top photo of her looking out the window shows wisdom beyond her  years. If that girl could talk…

When I mentioned I was going to be posting about Piper Jane less, I got some comments telling me to remember to still get nice photos of Pippy. Such good advice. One great thing about blogging regularly is that you do get into a habit of taking pictures. There are so many moments that I want to remember forever. Like the halo braid Pip is sporting above. Never a cuter halo braid-ee.

Busy busy bees.

Uncle Sam (and a friend-girl!) have been in town this week. It’s fun to have guests, but it always kind of turns my world upside down. In order to not disturb their sleep, I try to stay in my room and not walk around the apt too much in the mornings. So I have a giant mound of clothes piling up next to my bed..since my closet is in my office. Jake calls it clothes-ball. We make jokes about it like it’s part of our family. “Have you seen clothes-ball lately? She’s getting SO BIG!”. I also have a sheet-ball. Because I’m a sheet stealer. I pull the whole flat sheet over to my side of the bed, and put it into a ball without knowing it. I have woken up cradling it like an infant many times. So Jake and I make plenty of Sheet-ball jokes too.

Now you all know how weird Jake and I, and our marriage are.

This weekend is going to be on the nutty side as well. I bought an old sofa from Etsy for a steal, and I’m picking it up this weekend. It seemed totally easy and reasonable at the time, but now a 4 hour road trip feels a little crazy. Oh well, it will be fun!

Also, Sunday night is my work Christmas Party. A bunch of the girls are getting ready together and I can’t wait! Fancy hair, fancy clothes, fancy food.

Most importantly this weekend we are going to spend a lot of time with Piper Jane. She moved! Well, not moved-moved, but Blythedale completed the addition to the hospital and all the kids moved to their brand new rooms this week. Jake and I have called about a thousand times to see how it went, and have never gotten the right person on the phone (frustrating!), so we are just hoping no news is good news. The rooms are going to be so nice, we are extremely excited. There are only going to be two kids per room, and each family will have their own tv and sofa. Piper ends up watching a lot of spanish soaps, because that is what her roommate’s parents like to watch, so it will be great for her to watch her favorite shows after school again while she settles down for her nap.

Last but not least, I just got the word that I have the morning off the day of the Blythedale Christmas Charity Concert. I’m so excited to take Piper Jane to it. It gets crowded in there, so the nurses can’t really take too many kids on vents for safety reasons, but Piper Jane can go with me and enjoy some music! I’m so happy about it. I had to miss it a few years, but they have really big performers. Last year John Mayer was there! Rob Thomas goes every year and Jason Mraz and Colby Callet have gone too. It’s such a nice event for the children and families. Yay.

Anyway, I’ve missed you all this week in my time of busy. It’s nice to play catch up. Aren’t the holidays fun?

Little My (Moomins)

My friends recently returned from a trip to Finland, and they brought Piper Jane home some little figurines..since figurines are pip’s absolute favorite toy category at the moment. They said they couldn’t help themselves since one of the characters, Little My (Mala Mi) looks so much like Piper Jane.

I have to say that I completely agree. See for yourselves!

Isn’t that hand on hip sideways glance sneakiness so Piper?

She is obsessed with the toys. So much that she ripped the box. I’ve decided that since everything at her house gets lost, I have to bring these home in between visits so that she can have them as long as possible. As soon as I put my bag down onto her bed, she makes her way over to it to look for her Moomins. Her favorite thing is to hold as many in each hand as possible.

The Moomins are characters from a Scandinavian cartoon. I wish I understood the language because I found some clips on youtube. I wanted to see Little My in action. She did no disappoint!

Here is a little youtube video. The show is entertaining even if you don’t understand it! By the way, if I had a super power I wouldn’t be mad if it happened to be speaking every language.

Canon Powershot ELPH 300HS Review

I recently received a little Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS point-and-shoot camera to review. I was excited about this review, because I’ve been a Canon user for a long time.

The focus of my review is the low-light HS System. Canon has a great project going on right now called “Your Second Shot,” where your memories that were lost because of bad lighting and poor picture quality can be recaptured.

What immediately came to mind when I thought of this project, was Piper Jane! Moments with my little tiny wee baby girl are the most special, and when the lights are dimmed during nap time (but Pip is still awake and playing), I often find myself dying to take a picture. I can’t tell you how many blurry, grainy pictures I have from times like these. Jake and I brought the camera along for a Pip visit and even though the lights were off, and the light from the windows should have had the pictures completely backlit and shadowy, the low-light HS System definitely did the job.

Here is a bad low-light photo of Piper Jane looking suspicious. Notice the grainy look and shadows.

Here is the recreated photo with low light of Pippy looking suspicious. Much more clear and less shadows.

This camera is extremely easy to use and so conveniently adorable and small. Jake and I have both been very pleased with the quality of the photos, and Jake even said a bunch of photography code words to explain why it was so good, which I agreed with.

Have you ever had a great moment that was lost because the photo didn’t turn out? Canon is on a mission to help real people recapture these moments.
